Mmm: Abstract Tableware Inspired by Rolling Mountains

A Unique Blend of Aesthetics and Functionality

Mmm is a collection of abstract tableware that combines smooth lines and shapes to bring joy to its users. The standout feature of Mmm is the raised hill that divides the plate into two parts, allowing for the separation of different kinds of food. This ensures that the flavors remain pure and do not interrupt each other. The smart design of the vivid edges of Mmm also maximizes comfort and usability, perfectly matching the shape of our hands. Additionally, when not in use, Mmm resembles groups of mountains and hills, adding a touch of elegance to any shelf.

To achieve the rounded edges and smooth surfaces, Magpie utilizes Jingdezhen ceramics, known for their high quality and durability. These ceramics not only provide a glossy shine but also ensure that Mmm stands the test of time.

The Mmm collection consists of three sizes: a long plate measuring 110 mm x 20 mm x 280 mm, a medium plate measuring 180 mm x 20 mm x 210 mm, and a small plate measuring 200 mm x 20 mm x 120 mm. These dimensions have been carefully chosen to accommodate various types of dishes.

Designed for high-level dinner receptions, Mmm showcases the premium aesthetic of the host or hostess. The largest plate is ideal for main dishes such as steak, pork, or lamb chops, while the middle-sized plate is perfect for fruit salad, seafood, or green vegetables. The smallest plate is a wise choice for desserts like fritters, trifles, cocoa puffs, or puddings. Each plate in the collection is designed to enhance the dining experience and create a sense of splendor.

The Mmm project was initiated in September 2015 at Zhengzhou University of Light Industry and completed in February 2016. Extensive research was conducted to simplify the types of dishes and improve the beveling at the bottom edges to facilitate better washing in dishwashing machines. The dimensions of the plates were also carefully tested to ensure they could accommodate various types of food.

Magpie faced the challenge of creating tableware that not only matched the shape of our hands but also had an eye-catching appearance. Mmm is the result of their research and their first step towards achieving this goal.

Mmm plates are not only inspired by the beauty of rolling mountains but also extend the meaning of "mountain" in both aesthetics and functionality. With their vivid edges and smart design, they bring joy and ease to the dining experience. Each "hilltop" of the plate provides a separate place for sauces, enhancing the overall presentation.
